Born to a family of farmers, Mimaokawa Akiko is the "oldest" of identical twins beating her sister Hatsumi by a few minutes. Their early childhood within Minkai is to be expected as a peasant, rough and dirty. But the two showed a natural talent for engineering and magic when a traveling mage taught the two some very simple spells. Their lives would change, however, when the two's talent for fire magic began to become too dangerous for the village elders and shaman could handle.
Luck would have it that tales of the two reached a well-off alchemist named Kajimoto Yukiko, a descendant of a hero that hailed from the village and distant cousin. She sponsored the two to attend an arcane academy in Sakakabe. Yukiko's experiments with alchemy fascinated Akiko. But one set of experiments would come to define her life, gunpowder.
The Mimaokawa twins would graduate from the academy when they were 25. Her sister would return to the village to start a school, while Akiko pursued further studies in firearms and ship building under the watchful eye of the Tokitaka Gunworks's proprietor, Kusawagi Jinzo. The man was a engineering genius employed by the Minkaian armed forces.
Akiko learned much from and it allowed her to satisfy a certain urge to destroy things with fire she and her sister have always felt since they were children. But as Jinzo got older, she did not age a day. While many agreed that she was clearly touched by outsiders, rumors started to circulate. When Jinzo died at the ripe age of 95, her rival used the opportunity to ruin Akiko's name and eliminate her as the potential heir.
Ruin came to the Tokitaka Gunworks and was eventually absorbed into a rival clan of Jinzo's. Not wishing to be apart of the further ruination, Akiko has spent the last 20 years wandering as a freelance shipwright and expert on firearms.
